U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright arrived in Sarajevo on Wednesday for a 2-day visit.
She is in the Bosnian capital to examine the implementation of the U-S sponsored Dayton accords.
The accords marked the end of the Bosnian war in 1995.
During her two-day visit, talks are planned with representatives of all three of Bosnia's ethnic groups - Muslims, Serbs, and Croats.
Albright flew to Sarajevo from Prague where she had been making a sentimental visit to her Czech homeland.
Immediately after arriving Sarajevo, she met Bosnian opposition leaders in the U-S embassy before leaving for the northern town of Brcko.
Brcko had been under sole control of Bosnian Serbs last year but was subsequently placed under a joint administration of Serbs and the Muslim-Croat Federation.
The International supervisor for Brcko, Robert Farrand, is due to formally declare the town a neutral district.
Washington hopes the town can serve as a model of reconciliation for Kosovo.
Albright will return to Sarajevo later on Wednesday for meetings with the national leaders before traveling on Thursday to the Bosnian Serb capital, Banja Luka.
While there she will hold talks with Bosnian Serb Prime Minister Milorad Dodik and other leaders who are at odds with Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.
