Well the most important for the region is Touriga Franca, in terms of volume and overall quality of the grape, well adapted to the Douro. And Tinta Roriz. I would say these are the two largest, the two varieties that are most vastly planted, and then followed by Barroca. And then comes Touriga Nacional. Touriga Nacional here at Noval is extremely important, and it's in all our top blends. And styles of wine - from Vintage Port to LBVs, even in Colheitas and in some Tawnies. And in our top red wines.
Why? What is it about Touriga Nacional that's so high quality?
Well, Touriga Nacional is just extremely well adapted. Well, it wasn't for quite some time... it has been for the last 20 years. People are using it more and more. It has an extraordinary floral aromatic expression. The purity of the fruit it yields after fermentation is absolutely fantastic, and also in terms of balanced acidity and PH in the wine is very very good. And these characteristics are fundamental when you are blending into wines. Either for making a varietal Douro red, which they are a few around, we also make our Quinta do Noval Touriga Nacional single varietal, and it's an excellent overall variety. Excellent. And all of these varieties that I mentioned all yield quite a bit of alcohol, so we are talking varieties that are also around 14% alcohol, potential alcohol.
So if Nacional is our floral wine, concentrated, better acidity variety, what would Roriz be? And what would Franca be?
I would say Franca is very nice because Franca on an excellent year, Franca can be quite similar to Touriga Nacional in terms of aromatic expression but then it yields less alcohol. So it's a very good foundation variety to build on, Touriga Franca.
So it's like the Merlot of the Douro?
Yes, absolutely. All the important wines have some Franca in. It's a really good foundation. And never has really excess alcohol.
Tinta Roriz for example, unlike Touriga Nacional which is more floral, peppery, black chocolate type of variety, Tinta Roriz goes more into the fruit side of the aromatics sector. So more of strawberry, sometimes strawberry, cassis, even cherry like aromas, very different, even in colour!
So when you have all of these, you can really start blending everything together.
