Snakebird is a challenging puzzle game, where you guide snake-like creatures through intricate grid-based levels to reach a portal. The snakes move one square at a time, trailing their bodies along their path. They can climb and manoeuvre, and stay immune to gravity as long as some body part stays grounded. By eating fruit, your body extends, allowing access to new paths. The core idea is simple, but there are all sorts of clever ways you can manoeuvre and position your snakes, and only a handful of gimmicks are introduced to the game, such as multiple snakes controlled in turn, and pushable blocks.


The Complete version includes the original 50 levels, and an additional 70 “Primer” levels. The Primer levels offer an accessible introduction to the core mechanics, but don't prepare players for the sharp difficulty spike in the main-game, where solutions can be highly convoluted, requiring both precision, and long-term planning! The solutions themselves tend to be cleverly designed and fair, though finding them can be challenging due to the huge solution space, and lack of any feedback as to whether you're on the right track.


Despite the difficulty, playability is really helped by the well implemented restart and undo buttons. The flexible level-select is welcome too, as it typically allows you to switch to a number of different puzzles, if you become stuck on one.

Overall... despite the childish aesthetics, Snakebird Complete works well as a highly challenging puzzle game, that is both fun and rewarding. however... the core levels will be frustrating for most casual players, and the easier levels that are thrown in offer very little satisfaction.
