Many tents these days require a good pitch to keep them standing especially many ultralight tents like my Zpacks duplex: [ Ссылка ]
But often the coolest places to camp don’t have beautiful soft ground to put pegs into. I used this method on many Australian hiking trails like the Larapinta, Jatbula, cape to cape and when wild camping off track in the budawangs. The best views are often rocky platforms. These campsites, up high are some of the most spectacular, so this method is great for allowing you to camp safely and still get amazing views.
Staking out your tent safely can be done using the Big Rock Little Rock method. The first thing you need is a length of string coming off of your tent tie down points. You can use para cord or a shoelace. I leave these on my tents at all times to help with this method if I can’t get pegs in.
I like to use a bowline knot to create the loop at the end. You then loop it back on its self making a little loop to catch the small rock. Once secure plop a big rock in front of the small rock - to create a chock stone with the small rock. Repeat for each tie down point. In really windy weather make sure you have a good amount of weight for the big rock.
Always return rocks after using them as they are important habitat for our native species. Also be careful collecting rocks as snakes and spiders may be under them.
I hope this helps you stake out your tent out on rocky ground.
Let me know if you have any tips or tricks for pitching in areas where you can’t get a peg in the ground.
If rocks are limited try something similar with perhaps branches (small branch, big branch)
