Charlottenlund Fort was built in the years 1883-86 as a coastal battery. Originally, the fort was an open earthworks, but in the years 1910-12 it was rebuilt into a coastal fort. The equipment with twelve 29 cm Haubitzers is still in its original location and can still be seen. The fort was part of the series of sea forts that were to protect Copenhagen from the sea side. From Charlottenlund you can see two other forts, Flakfortet and Middelgrundsfortet. The fort was closed in 1932 and is today a campsite and a treasured recreational area; in the summer a popular place for young people to stay the hot summer evenings.
