A fixture between two of Italian football’s heavyweights has rarely taken place with both sitting so low down the table, as AC Milan host Roma with both sides starting the round outside the top-eight in Serie A. While it’s been far from an ideal start to life at the San Siro for Paulo Fonseca, his Rossoneri do at least appear to be improving with their last 11 games across all competitions producing just one defeat (W7, D3).
Consistency is now their aim, although four victories (all by multi-goal margins) across their last five competitive games (L1) points to an uptick in form. Despite only Inter Milan (81) and Juventus (77) beating Milan more than Roma (50), that record may not be trouble the home fans too much though, as the Rossoneri are unbeaten in league H2Hs on home soil since 2017 (W4, D2) and have beaten Roma more times than they have any other club in their Serie A history (79)!
Roma’s third manager of the season, Claudio Ranieri, has endured a mixed start to life in charge of the Giallorossi (W4, D1, L3). He has at least steered them away from the relegation zone in terms of league position, though their gap to the top-six - which stands at 12 points coming into the round - outlines the size of the task ahead of Ranieri.
Room for improvement is vast on the road, where Roma’s disastrous form has seen them fail to win any of their away league matches this season (D4, L4). Only strugglers Venezia have accumulated fewer travelling points ahead of the weekend, with their 11-game streak without a top-flight away win (D5, L6) their worst since the turn of the century.
Players to watch: In the absence of Rafael Leão, Tijjani Reijnders has stepped up with five goals in his last six matches - he also assisted the opener in last season’s corresponding fixture. On loan at Roma from Milan, Alexis Saelemaekers has directly contributed to goals in successive multi-goal wins for the Giallorossi (G1, A1), and could well be primed to haunt his parent club.
Hot stat: Roma have not scored inside the opening 25 minutes of a Serie A away game since October 2023.
