Hello everyone.
close to the place, I live I have the end of the union canal. I decided to walk a chunk of it and cross it to the water of the Leith walkway. I hope you enjoy my video and if I earn your subscription today, you can support my journey by clicking on subscribe button below.
Union canal construction started in 1817 and has been finished 5 years later. Purposely built to bring minerals, especially coal to Edinburgh. This canal is listed as three individual monuments by historic Scotland, according to the counties in which it flows. Union Canal has a length of 31 miles or 50 kilometres and is a massive part of the life of local people who like to spend time here with their families and friends.
The water of the Leith walkway is an impressive natural heritage inside the city of Edinburgh. Full of beautiful birds, a peaceful atmosphere and many gems of architecture, art or natural landscapes that you can easily spot. you can walk the whole 12 miles to Leith or split it into smaller walks. As it goes downhill it is providing easy access to the Scottish National Gallery of modern art, or dean gallery.
Saughton rose gardens are a great spot for taking a short break. Or a long one if you fancy. This Beautiful garden has been opened to the public in 1910 and it contains everything that you need to spending a good time. From skate park, outdoor gym, and walking and cycle paths to floral displays and glasshouses. From wildlife look out for otters, kingfishers or herons on the riverside.
Dean Village is a tourist hot spot. Just 7 minutes walk to princess street this historic small village was previously used for milling for more than 800 years wich remains can be still seen. Hidden in the village, you will come across a variety of mill stones or plaques decorated with bread. The first mention of Dene - Deep Valley or Dean Village has been in 1145 by king David the first.
This area remains a separate village till the 19th century.
I finished this beautiful walk right in Leith after 16 miles altogether i feel fortunate to have such beautiful weather, nice talk with awesome people down the walk or quiet time with the sound of the river in the background.
