Ministerial Committee on Transformation in Higher Education
The Ministerial Committee on Transformation in Higher Education (MCTHE) was appointed
to review the state of transformation in Higher Education following the Reitz incident at the
University of the Free State. The team found that there were essentially no institutions free of
transformational challenges. The country found itself fiercely divided following the MCTHE
report, with many echoing these sentiments, while others were deeply offended by what they
saw as unsubstantiated allegations of racism. The question remains, what should we focus on?
As Higher Education institutions, we have a civil obligation to the world to step up and enable
transformation. Yet, there is still a lot of confusion about transformation. Is it about race? Is it
about racial representivity? Is it about racial access, or about racial climate? Is it about knowledge
and knowing? We have to understand transformation in a far deeper way than we have
understood it to date. In order to define transformation, we need to think about it differently.
