Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) is a freight specific railway under construction in northern to eastern India by the Indian Railways. The railway will run between Ludhiana in Punjab and Dankuni (near Kolkata) in West Bengal. The railway is one of the multiple freight corridors. For the railway line, broad gauge will be used. The Eastern DFC will mostly have double tracks and will be electrified but the section from Ludhiana in Punjab to Khurja (Bulandshahr) in Uttar Pradesh 400 Km will be single line electrified due to lack of space. This freight corridor will cover a total distance of 1839 km. This corridor will also pass through Dadri, which is the origin point of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and which will serve as a junction.
First 2 DFC, Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), from Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai and EDFC from Punjab to West Bengal, which will decongest railway network by moving 70% of India's goods train to these two corridors.
The freight corridor will cover first 447 km of Ludhiana - Dhari - Khurja section with single electrified track. After this the remaining line will be double track electrified up to Dankuni in West Bengal. This will pass through the important districts of Sahnewal, Doraha, Ludhiana, Sirhind, Rajpura, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Hathras, Barhan, Tundla, Firozabad, Etawah, Kanpur, Allahabad and Chandauli. To reduce load over the main line, this line will have many junctions. The proposed junctions on this line are Dhandharikalan, Sirhind, Rajpura, Khurja, Tundla, Bhaupur, Prempur, Karchhana, Jeonathpur, Mughalsarai Junction railway station, Sasaram, Son Nagar, Gomoh, Andal, Bardhaman and Dankuni (The eastern terminal point).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (29 December) inaugurated the 351 km long 'New Bhaupur-New Khurja section' of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and Operation Control Centre (OCC) at Prayagraj.
Speaking on the occasion, Modi said, "After Independence we are witnessing the inauguration of the most advanced rail section in the country. The first goods train that will run on the New Bhaupur-Khurja section will give a message of the new 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) and the new operation control centre in Prayagraj is one of the best control centres in the world."
"The Operation Control Center in Prayagraj is also a symbol of the new power of the new India. Anyone will be proud as the management and data technology used in the control centre has been prepared in India," he said.
Modi also emphasised that "infrastructure" is the biggest source of the country's development.
The Prime Minister said the connectivity is the nerve of the nation, and if the nerves are in better shape then the health and prosperity of the nation is much higher.
He said that today, when India is moving fast towards becoming the biggest economic power of the world, "then the best connectivity is the priority of the country".
The Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) is one of the largest rail infrastructure projects undertaken by the government. The overall cost is pegged at Rs 81,459 crore.
Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) has been set up as a special purpose vehicle to undertake planning, development of financial resources, construction, maintenance and operation of the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC).
In the first phase, the organisation is constructing the Western DFC (1,504 route km) and Eastern DFC (1,856 route km) spanning a total length of 3,360 route km.
The Prime Minister further said in India the passenger and the goods train run on the same tracks. "Thus the speed of the goods train is slow. In such a situation, passenger trains are stopped at stations to give way to goods trains. This results in delay of the passenger trains.
"These special corridors for freight trains would ensure passenger trains run on time. It will also ensure that carriage trains can run at thrice the speed and they will be able to carry double load capacity," Modi said.
Modi said the freight corridors will be a very big mode for self-reliant India, whether it is industry, trade or business, farmer or consumer, everyone is going to benefit from it.
