(6 Mar 2020) Clashes erupted on Friday as refugees and other migrants tried to get into Greece through the country’s eastern boarder after Turkey's declaration last week that its previously guarded borders with Europe were open.
Greek's border authorities strove for a sixth day to keep thousands of migrants out by using tear gas, stun grenades and water cannons.
Turkish officials claimed that Greek gunfire killed one migrant and wounded five others — a claim that Athens flatly rejected.
Thousands of refugees and other migrants have been trying to get into Greece through the country’s eastern land and sea borders in the past week after Turkey declared its previously guarded borders with Europe were open.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Friday held a telephone call with Germany's Angela Merkel, during which he told the German chancellor that the Turkey-EU migration arrangements are no longer working and need to be revised, according to a statement from Erdogan's office.
