In the Navajo Nation, lawmakers have official declared April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention month.
The U.S. Department of Justice estimated that 100 women on the Navajo Nation are assaulted every month. This averages to more than three assaults per day. Vice President Jonathan Nez describes this as a public health crisis.
Officials hope that by having a month dedicated to the issue of sexual assault, these cases can be eradicated from the Navajo people.
