Sprouse-Reitz was originally a five and dime store that was founded in 1909. Founded in Tacoma, Washington and based in Portland, Oregon, Sprouse-Reitz at its peak had around 470 locations in eleven states throughout the Western United States. Unable to keep up with the times and late to try change, Sprouse-Reitz declined during the 1980s and into the 1990s and by closing in 1993 into 1994, there were 84 stores remaining.
