(23 Jul 2014) British Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond met Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Wednesday night in a bid to end the two-week long conflict in Gaza.
After meeting Abbas, Hammond said he will work closely with US Secretary of State John Kerry and the Egyptian leadership to make sure a long-term solution is found "which will allow the Palestinian people to live in peace and the Israeli people to live in security."
Abbas then convened the Fatah political committee to brief them on the situation.
So far at least 695 Palestinians and 34 Israelis have been killed in the fighting.
