Night flying takes skill and lots of practice to stay proficient. The Pacific Northwest gets very dark after 4:30PM in the winter which makes it the perfect place to regain your night currency.
A total of 5 trips around the pattern were made on this night; 2 touch and go's during twilight, followed by 3 night time full stop landings with taxi-back (greater than 30 min after civil sunset). There were 3 of us in the pattern that night. The video shows the first 3 landings, the 4th and 5th were too dark to film unfortunately.
Mountains, open ocean and night time are the three perils of flying here in the Pacific Northwest. I try to limit myself to 1 of 3 whenever possible, this flight tonight was to ensure if I run out of daylight on a return flight to KBLI we'd be current (Ginger and me) and live to fly another day. Night flying can be wonderful when done properly.
Before flying tonight I performed a thorough pre-flight of myself, all lighting outside and in, to be sure Ginger and I were airworthy for nighttime flying. I absolutely don't take any shortcuts with this kind of stuff. It was an absolutely great flight!!
