Your medication Hydroxychloroquine
Hydroxychloroquine is also known by the brand name: Plaquenil.
Hydroxychloroquine comes in 200 mg tablets.
Hydroxychloroquine is most commonly used to treat or prevent malaria, or to treat rheumatoid arthritis. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, hydroxychloroquine is taken by mouth once daily with food or milk. If taken for malaria prevention, hydroxychloroquine is taken once a week. If taken for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, it is take once daily. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.
While taking hydroxychloroquine, your skin may become more sensitive to the sun. It is important to wear sunscreen and protective clothing.
Some common side effects with hydroxychloroquine include mood changes, bad dreams, fever, chills, headache, upset stomach, diarrhea, and fatigue.
Some less common side effects include ringing in the ears, seizures, and muscle weakness.
While taking hydroxychloroquine, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if:
• You are pregnant or may become pregnant or are breast feeding
• You have a heart condition or diabetes
• You had any eye changes or changes in eyesight due to this drug or drugs like this one
• You are under the age of 12 or over the age of 65
• You are really tired, dizzy, confused, short of breath, or have chest tightness, swelling of the tongue, face, or throat
• You start taking new medications, vitamins, or supplements.
