We did a few horror games over the weeks and a big horror title is coming out later this week, so I think it is time to go on a nice, relaxing vacation. Tchia promises exactly that! Tchia is a lovely, colorful game all about exploring and familiarizing yourself with the culture of New Caledonia. The developers themselves labeled it a love letter to their home and it shows. The world is vibrant, full of detail and an absolute joy to explore.
Though they take a few familiar tricks from other open world games, the setting and atmosphere is really the selling point here. From the moment I turned on the game I had a big smile on my face with just how cozy everything felt. The white and yellow beaches, the crystal clear water, all the cute animals you come across...it's truly fantastic.
Though quite a few quests are indeed fetch quests, the overall relaxed mood makes it to where it never feels like a chore. You are also never tasked with gathering too much to where it becomes a slog. And it is always cool to find a new creature you can transform into and traverse the island with.
Probably the only thing that I felt was a bit off was that the story itself did not feel balanced during the overall campaign. What starts out as a beautiful vacation, sometimes gets pretty bleak and heavy and though that mix is definitely possible (look at Far Cry 3) I felt that the balance was off here. Nevertheless, I had a great time with this game and I am sure I will return to this tropical paradise multiple times in the future to catch some digital sun.
