Russia's Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, stated that arms control agreements from the Cold War era are now a "thing of the past" due to the collapse of trust between Moscow and the West. Speaking on December 18, Gerasimov accused the United States of fueling global conflicts and dismantling key arms control treaties, such as the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and the 1987 INF Treaty.
In response, Gerasimov announced plans for Russia to strengthen ties with nations like China, India, Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela while condemning U.S. military actions in Europe and Asia, particularly its missile deployments and NATO activities near Russian borders.
This declaration comes amid heightened tensions following Russia's suspension of the New START treaty in 2023 and ongoing U.S. support for Ukraine in the conflict. Gerasimov warned that these developments are accelerating a strategic arms race and escalating global insecurity.
