Artist statement
Why the egg? Why the breasts? Why the bodies? Why the woman? There's no definite answer. Mostly because they are from within my conscience (and/or sub-conscience). Mostly because I wanted to be honest with myself.
These works are a continuation process of my works for the past 10 years, examining and underlining the essence of the female being through the SELF. Since around 1993 the works have somehow become more straightforward, comprising female body forms as the main focus. Now the body becoming a vessel turns abstract.
Truthfully, I don't have words for these works. They are so overwhelming and challenging to me. I just wanted to be more "abstract". Not meaning that they are less representational. But if I really have to explain, these would be some of my definitions.
woman - the mystery
woman - the incomplete
woman - the versatile
woman - the passionate
woman - the vessel
woman - the practical
woman - the nonsense [Pinaree Sanpitak 1998]
The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) is QAGOMA's flagship international contemporary art event, and the only major exhibition series in the world to focus exclusively on the contemporary art of Asia, the Pacific and Australia.
Art works by more than 77 artists from 20 countries and regions are included in APT3 around the central theme 'Beyond the Future'. The art covers a range of media including performance, sculpture, painting, installation, textile, video, new technology and photography. Artists are from Japan, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, India, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Australia and, for the first time, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Niue, and Wallis and Futuna Islands.
APT3 includes a strong emphasis on artists whose work crosses boundaries between past and future and between craft, tradition and contemporary art. Many of the works invite audience interaction while artistic collaborations across cultures and art forms feature strongly.
