The correlation between genotype and phenotype in genetic diseases have been established decades ago. Ever since then, it has become the basis of precision medicine for human genetic diseases. But how can one get started in this field?
During Omics Research Symposium - August 2022, for those interested to get started in the field of genomics, Dr. Anshu Bhardwaj, CSIR IMTECH, Principal Scientist recommended learning about human pangenome to understand the significance of genomics and where the field is heading:
“In regards to new developments happening in precision medicine, we have evolved from human reference genome to human pangenome. That means now we need to capture the complexity of human pangenome with respect to precision medicine if we are to go forward.”
Why is there a global effort to catalog genomic variations? What role does mitochondrial DNA play in human diseases? Why is antimicrobial resistance called a silent pandemic?

CSIR IMTECH, Principal Scientist- Bioinformatics and Big data Analysis
Anshu Bhardwaj, a biologist and data scientist, obtained her Ph.D. in 2008 in understanding genotype-phenotype correlations in human mitochondrial diseases from CSIR-CCMB, Hyderabad. She has over 40 publications to her credit and has trained over 500 young students. She served as an Associate scientific advisor to Science Translational Medicine and is on the Editorial board of Journal of Genetics, Review Editor for Frontiers in Systems Biology, Protein Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics and Advisor to F1000Research Galaxy Gateway. She has several honors and awards to her credit - She was one of the four Young Innovators in India, United National Development Program (UNDP), selected for the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Program by US State Department, awarded Newton-Bhabha Fund from the British Council and the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK and long-term Group Leader Fellowship by CRI, Paris. More recently, her lab has developed a unique scientific video game for awareness on AMR which is endorsed by WHO, India. Her passion is towards biomedical big data analytics platforms with focus on understanding infection and rare disease biology for better therapeutics and diagnostics.
