Holding back tears and giving emotional pleas, Texas Senate Democrats are once again demanding Gov. Greg Abbott allow them to pass laws so they can begin having discussions on a gun control proposal in the wake of the Robb Elementary School deadly mass shooting in Uvalde that killed 19 children and two teachers.
Friday will mark exactly one month since the massacre, and Democrats in the Texas Capitol’s upper chamber gathered Monday to pressure the governor and provide details on a measure they want to pass.
“We must take action to ensure another group of parents are not planning funerals instead of planning summer vacations,” said state Sen. Carol Alvarado, D-Houston.
Texas Senate Democrats are proposing four key measures they believe would have prevented the Uvalde shooting.
Included in their bill are raising the legal age to buy a gun to 21, passing a red flag law that allows courts to issue temporary removal of firearms from people deemed a danger to others or themselves, and closing the loophole that does not require private gun sellers to perform background checks, and add a 72-hour cooling-off period between the time someone purchases a gun and actually gets to possess the gun.
