The Egyptian National Women's Beach Volleyball Team have been training hard after qualifying for the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics.
As the newest women's sports team in the country and also the first women's team to attend the Olympics, they are making history in Egypt.
The team members remain excited about the moment when they qualified for Olympics.
"It was a great achievement and not easy to repeat. Our efforts in the past years were not wasted, thank God for that. The qualifications in Nigeria were very difficult; that was where the final round was. The weather was extremely hot, and we were playing against teams who have better continental and world rankings. It was overwhelming to win over Nigeria in their home, and they are one of the continent's strongest teams," said Doaa Tawfik, a member of the team.
This team, which was only founded in 2014, has managed to knock out well-known African teams in a mere two years, and will now be the only team representing Africa at the Olympics.
The national team has five members, but only two can compete during the games.
"I have not yet settled on the players; the choice is extremely difficult. We know only two will represent Egypt, so they have to be the best two. We held two training camps in Egypt and this week we will head to Spain, where they have one of the world's best beach volleyball centers. Our camp there will end on July 20, and once again we will fly to a championship in Switzerland. Then there are two days left for us before Rio kicks off," said Ahmed Abdallah, the team's coach.
The women's spirits are high, and for a team with very little experience, they are relaxed about the future. A desire to honor their country drives them through this journey.
Regardless of their results in Rio, they have already made their country proud by having reached a world class level in such a short time.
