'오미크론' 약하다?‥후유증 무시할 수 없어
The Omicron variant has been spreading rapidly around the world for the past few months.
Although it is said to produce milder symptoms, a growing number of people are suffering from various after-effects.
For details let's turn to our Song Yoo-jin.
South Korea's COVID-19 tally has surpassed the 10 million mark.
The Omicron variant has played a key role in the surge... after it began to spread rapidly across the country... late last year.
Despite its high transmissibility, Omicron has been known to trigger milder symptoms, but some people are still struggling even after testing out of self-isolation.
"I've been released from quarantine, but I still cough a lot of and have a runny nose. Although the symptoms are milder than before, I feel that my health is not the same before getting Omicron."
"My voice has changed and I'm constantly covered in a cold sweat. So I need to turn on the fan when I'm working in the day and when I wake up in the morning, my entire body is covered in sweat."
The after-effects are wide-ranging.
The most common symptoms are in line with the common cold... which are a dry cough, fatigue, and dizziness.
However, in some cases, neurological symptoms... such as brain fog, insomnia, anxiety, and forgetfulness have also been reported.
Some have also complained of a loss in smell and taste.
As the exact cause behind these long-lasting symptoms has yet to be discovered, experts say the best advice is to do all one can to avoid getting the virus.
"It's best to not go through COVID-19 if you can avoid it because as we are currently seeing, some people are more vulnerable to having it more severely and for those people who have it more severely but also with underlying diseases, they're also more likely to have secondary and tertiary possible side effects from it such as the lung fibrosis. So I guess my advice is number one get vaccinated so that you have much lesser chances of getting in the disease."
However, after getting infected and if there are after-effects, people should not hesitate to receive help.
"If the symptoms are bothersome enough, it is best to visit a doctor, get tested, and receive appropriate medical treatment rather than keeping them to yourself. High risk groups, such as those with underlying health conditions should especially watch out."
