What is chronic pancreatitis? Chronic pancreatitis is a persistent inflammation of your pancreas that doesn’t improve over time. Your pancreas is a vital organ located deep in the abdomen, behind the stomach. This elongated organ about the size of a hand has two primary functions. First, it produces digestive enzymes that break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the food we eat. This is known as its exocrine function. Second, it secretes hormones like insulin and glucagon directly into the bloodstream, regulating blood sugar levels – its endocrine function. Unlike acute pancreatitis, which is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas that typically resolves with treatment, chronic pancreatitis is a long-lasting inflammation that leads to permanent damage and scarring of the pancreatic tissue.
