STORYLINE:
A suicide bomber blew himself up on Saturday outside a police station in eastern Afghanistan, killing three policemen and a civilian, officials said.
Provincial police chief Sadar Mohammad Zazai said the bomber approached the local police headquarters in the Shai Kali area of restive Khost province on foot early in the morning and detonated his explosives-laden vest.
He said two policemen were killed and three wounded, and that one civilian was killed and 17 wounded, though a provincial health official put the number at 25.
Differing death tolls from officials are common in Afghanistan in the immediate aftermath of attack.
Among those were a child and a local police chief, Zazai said. It was not immediately clear whether the police chief was specifically targeted.
The country has seen an increase in bombings and targeted assassinations in recent months as international forces have staged an offensive against the Taliban, which announced its spring offensive several weeks ago.
The latest violence came the same day the United Nations released an interim report on civilian deaths that shows that last month 368 people were killed in the conflict and 593 were wounded, making May the deadliest month for Afghan civilians since 2007.
