You might look at that logo and think "is this Dead Space VR?", I wouldn't blame you, it's almost identical to the Dead Space 2 logo. However this isn't Dead Space, this is Dead Effect 2 VR for the Oculus Quest / Oculus Quest 2 and it has far more in common with Doom VR or Killing Floor than it does with Dead Space! There haven't been many new Oculus Quest 2 games recently, June & July are usually a bit of a gaming drought but last week this new sci-fi horror FPS snuck onto Oculus App Lab for Oculus Quest / Oculus Quest 2 owners, an arcadey shooter with a TONNE of content, Dead Effect 2 VR has been available on PC VR for quite some time but has now jumped over to standalone VR. At £14.99 is it worth picking up or is this an App Labs title you should avoid at all costs? Let's take a look at some Dead Effect 2 VR gameplay running on Oculus Quest 2 and find out...
The Dead Effect 2 VR Oculus Quest release is pretty faithful to the PC VR version, visually it looks sharp and although it lacks some of the particle/smoke effects of the higher quality version the world still looks great. It's immediately obvious where the inspiration came from for this title as exploring the spaceship feels incredibly similar to the Doom 3 (and even more similar if you've played the Doom 3 VR port on the quest) but Dead Effect 2 VR doesn't try to hide these inspirations, instead it wears them proudly on it's sleeve for everyone to see (the Dead Space 2 logo...). The game is far more arcadey than many VR titles launching right now, guns are reloaded by simply bringing your gun towards you belt and items are picked up by pointing at them and clicking the trigger, elements like these may put off those who are looking for a more immersive VR experience but for those looking for a fun arcade romp there's tonnes of content here.
A huge range of guns to buy & upgrade, armour to unlock & upgrade, a full story to work through with sidequests and optional objectives, wave based survival modes set in different areas of the ship and a fairly comprehensive set of comfort options/VR adjustments make Dead Effect 2 VR Quest 2 worthy of it's £14.99 price point for those who just want to shoot zombies with cool guns. The biggest shame is that the co-op element has been removed for the Quest / Quest 2 versions, fingers crossed this will be re-added in the future as a game like this is nest experienced with company.
