Sins of a Solar Empire is back with a sequel! Who saw this coming! I personally had hoped and hopped for years, but with not a single word out of Stardock and Ironclad Games for some many years I had all but given up hope. Yet here we are in 2022 looking at the gameplay screenshots of this upcoming space strategy RTS that blends even some 4X elements into its gameplay.
For those who might not be familiar with this gem, the original came out all the way back in 2008 with many expansions and DLCs even up to 2018. That is 10 years worth of content updates. Its gameplay is based on real time base building in gravity wells of planets and asteroid fields on a map which is set in a single plane and connecting many such planetary bodies.
You traveled between these but also used wormholes to jump big distances. You could build massive almost uncountable fleets of spaceships from the tiny explorers to massive battleships which had their own attack craft or massive cannons. They were able to level up and unlock new abilities. Later expansions included even "titan" super-capital ships with an astonishing array of weaponry and destructive power.
So what will this sequel bring us? Well by the words of the developers different races and factions, starbases, Titans, Superweapons, single and multiplayer with up to 10 players as well as great AI enemy to battle with.
But they will start slow, only single player engine test in Fall 2022 featuring the TEC Loyalists faction. Then in early 2023 multiplayer will be added and the next faction called Vasari. This means that those who pre-order the game can start playtesting these features as they are added.
This sequel is based on a new 64-bit multicore engine, which will make even bigger maps and fleets possible with increased visual fidelity. Planets will actually orbit stars, and moons now orbit their planets, in this one while turrets will be capable of tracking individual fully-simulated missiles.
These new orbital mechanics mean that the entire battlefield and your whole space empire is on a dynamic board which moves as you play and every orbit will move you both closer and farther from your enemies position. Making timely attacks or defense buildups a very important part of your decision making and plan preparations.
I love that changing something as static as the battlefield in an RTS game can have such profound consequences on the entire gameplay. This dynamic movement of the planets and your bases and fleets is certainly a fresh take which this genre sorely needed. Even if it is inspired by a very old board game from the 80’s.
Do note this is not a Homeworld like game, so it’s based on 2D movement. Like Stellaris in fact. There's no date for early access yet, so I will keep you posted on that. We will soon know just what kind of asymmetry will the three factions have, how many different ships and planet types we will be able to play with and how will the resource collection, technology research and empire building be changing in this sequel.
Battle for galactic dominance as one of three unique races in a real-time strategy game with unrivaled scale! You’ll explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate through military force, diplomacy, trade, cultural influence, and other underhanded tactics.
Features Co-op Multiplayer Single Player Sins of a Solar Empire II is the highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed space strategy game that seamlessly blends real-time strategy and 4X gameplay and raises the bar on what it means to become the ruler of a vast space empire.
Explore the tragic war between the desperate Vasari, emergent TEC, and the vengeful Advent as their struggle leaves them exposed to much greater threats. Each race will further distinguish their play styles with unique game mechanics, new and reimagined units, extensive research trees, and refined sub-factions.
