This course was designed for medical professionals, faculty and students interested in learning about the causes of the rise in opioid use and overdose deaths in the last 20 years and identifying social determinants that predict increased risk for overdose.
Participants learned three evidence-based domains being promoted in the National Institutes of Health HEALing Communities Study.
Guest Speaker:
Scott Walters, Ph.D., is a regents professor of health behavior and health systems at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Ft. Worth, TX. He received his bachelor’s from Biola University, his master’s from San Diego State University, and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of New Mexico.
Walters’ research looks at ways to use motivational interviewing and technology as behavioral health interventions. His experience includes brief interventions for underage drinking, adults in the criminal justice system, heavy drinkers in hospital settings, people at risk of cancer or genetic disorders and community-based health navigation.
