A person jumped out of a burning building on Wednesday to escape an apartment fire.
Before 10 a.m., firefighters responded to the Pines of Ashton apartments off Sunnybrook Road near WakeMed's main campus.
Sky 5 flew over the scene at 10:30 a.m., where smoke was billowing out of a first-floor apartment. The fire started on the ground floor but impacted multiple levels.
The fire chief told WRAL News a man jumped from the third floor and was injured.
Twelve adults and 10 children were unable to return to their apartment homes. The Red Cross is helping them find another place to stay.
It took 37 firefighters to get the fire under control.
The side of the building was badly damaged near a set of windows.
Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire and whether there were working smoke alarms.
