Did you know that we can find the perimeter of any rectangle by using the formula two times the length plus two times the width?
Last lesson we learned that perimeter is the total distance around a shape. In this lesson we will be learning how to find the perimeter of a shape using a formula.
So where did this formula come from? We can begin by taking a look at the attributes of a rectangle.
If we were to look at a rectangle, what do we notice about its sides?
Are all the sides equal in length?
We can clearly see that the two sides that represent the length of the rectangle are congruent to each other.
We can also see that the two sides that represent the width are also equal to each other in length.
If we were to use the letter l to represent the length of the rectangle, and the letter w to represent the width we can find our perimeter by adding up all the sides.
Since we are adding the length twice and we are adding the width two times we can create the formula of perimeter that is two times the length plus two times the width.
Now let's add some numbers to our rectangle to find the total perimeter. Let’s say our rectangle had a length of 9 feet and a width of 4 feet.
Using the formula, that would be the same as 2 times 9 which plus 2 times 4 which is equal to 26 feet.
