Vitamin C: Why It Makes Pigs Grow Really Fast
Vitamin C is commonly used in post-weaning diets for pigs, as well as in booster packs for lactating sows, to prevent the deleterious effects of heat stress on feed intake. Vitamin C has recently been added to stud boar diets since it has been demonstrated to boost semen quality. Overall, pigs fed vitamin C-fortified diets acquire 17 percent more weight and consume 13 percent more feed.
When your pigs are about 12 weeks old, start feeding them a grower diet to help them grow quickly. Give your piglets Vitamin C supplements, then make a feed mix with 79 percent corn, maize, or sorghum, 10% soybean meal, 7% calcium and protein supplement, 4% sunflower or peanut meal, and 0.25 percent salt.
What is the best way to administer vitamin C to a pig?
Pure ascorbic acid, which contains vitamin C, is not heat stable it, should only be used in mash feeds. When feeding pelleted diets, you should use a heat-stabilized form of vitamin C (Stay-C from DSM). Pure ascorbic acid can also become bound when added to water systems due to its interaction with iron in the water. Pigs will grow quicker if ascorbic acid or Vitamin C is added to their diet — 800 gms. per kilo of feed — compared to those on normal diets.
Finally, swine need six different types of nutrients: water, carbs, lipids, protein (amino acids), minerals, and vitamins. Energy is a nutritional component that is predominantly obtained through the oxidation of carbohydrates and lipids, while not being a particular nutrient.
