On April 15, 1945 the British 11th Armored Division liberated Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
They found 13 000 unburied death bodies and almost 60 000 prisoners who were sick and starved. The allied forces managed to capture not only Nazi guards including Irma Grese, Josef Kramer, Elisabeth Volkenrath, Johanna Bormann, Wilhelm Dörr but also Dr. Fritz Klein.
They were tried at Belsen Trial which lasted less than 2 months and attracted a considerable amount of media attention all over the world.
Out of 45 defendants, a British military court sentenced 11 Nazi guards to death by hanging. They were executed on December 13, 1945 by Albert Pierrepoint – Britain’s most famous hangman.
The rest were acquitted or sentenced to prison. However, even those who were sentenced to 15 years imprisonment were released by the early 1950s.
Although justice can never bring back the murdered millions, the bestial Nazi war criminals did learn that they would face justice and be tamed and punished in the end.
