Encouraged by missionaries to leave their nomadic life in the forest the Ayoreos now live on government hand-outs on the fringe of Paraguayan society. For forty years the sombre, eloquent Mateo Sobode Chiqueno has collected his people’s stories on his battered cassette player to preserve something of the culture of these sun worshippers before it disappears. With its understated anger and beautifully composed images this is a simple, affecting lament for the Ayoreos’ fall from Eden.
