1. Kanhaiya Kumar, the former president of the JNU student's union, will be the CPI's candidate from Bihar's Begusarai for the national election. The decision was taken by the Left on Saturday, a day after Kumar was left out of the opposition coalition in Bihar. He will be joint candidate of the Left parties from Begusarai. Kanhaiya Kumar was widely expected to be the opposition's candidate from Begusarai. However, no seats were given to the CPI and CPI-M, making it clear that Kumar will not be supported by the mahagathbandhan. The seat fell into Tejashwi Yadav's RJD's share.
2. Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday announced that she will contest from Anantnag seat in Jammu and Kashmir for the Lok Sabha elections, PTI reported. Mufti had won the seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, but quit in 2016 to return to state politics. Jammu and Kashmir has six Lok Sabha seats. The party is yet to decide on a candidate for the Ladakh seat. Mufti said the party has decided not to field candidates in two Lok Sabha seats in the Jammu region – Jammu and Udhampur. The party’s decision to not contest the Jammu seats comes a few days after the National Conference decided not to field candidates for the two seats, in a seat sharing arrangement with the Congress.
3. Internal issues within the Congress party in Maharashtra are out in the open after a purported phone conversation between party chief Ashok Chavan and a distraught worker has gone viral. However, Ashok Chavan has not denied that the voice is indeed his and he admits there is major discontent over the Chandrapur seat for which candidate was declared on Saturday. Ashok Chavan admits there is discontent over the Chandrapur candidate of the party. All this on a day when the party held a press conference to formally announce its seat sharing agreement with Sharad Pawar's NCP and 54 other parties and pressure groups.
4. Rahul Gandhi hits out at Mamata Banerjee, says ‘West Bengal is run by one person who does what she wants’: Gandhi added that neither the Centre nor the state government had done anything to solve people’s problems.
5. The Election Commission had issued an advisory to the media saying exit polls can only be telecast after the final phase of polling for the Lok Sabha elections ends on May 19. The advisory is also applicable for Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim.
