Do you find that when you're on a sidehill lie and the ball is below your feet, your shots start to the right of the target?
It happens to the best players in the world - but they make just a few simple adjustments so that the ball lands at their intended target.
Connor struggled with his own sidehill lie golf shots with the ball below his feet and asked:
Hi Sean, I find when I'm on a sidehill and the ball is below my feet, I have a tendency to hit most of my shots right of my target. Could you please help me understand why this might be happening?
Face Plane Tilt
If you could imagine standing on a flat lie you can see that the face magnet and my target line are pretty much parallel to each other.
The further the ball is below my feet, the more face is going to aim to the right. What you are experiencing is Face Plane Tilt.
Notice that I haven't twisted the clubhead in any way. The more the ball sits below my feet, the farther the face will point right of the target.
This is also a very important reason to have your irons custom fit. When irons are too upright or too flat, it will change the face plane tilt - which will influence the starting direction of the ball.
I have a simple trick I would like you to try. The first thing you need to do is aim your body to the left to compensate for the face aiming to the right of the target. (The degree to which you aim left will depend on how much you need to compensate.) Using a face magnet in practice will help you gauge how the gradients of slopes will influence the tilt of the face.
The second thing I want you to do is grip up on the handle of the club. This will make the club seem a little bit longer and will make it easier to reach the ball - especially when the ball is sitting well below your feet.
Finally, you'll probably find that you might need to stand just a little bit closer to the ball, which is completely normal. This will make it easier for you to execute this type of shot.
