This sessions is a workout with the Mute Strum. This strum is the foundation the many strums I use. You'll find this technique a critical part of the Rumba Flamenco strum as well as the Calypso strum.
It can even be used by itself over and over. This is a strong I used to play the Beatles song "Ob La Di Ob La Da".
I consider this a fairly easy practice session for the beginner to advanced beginner guitar student. If you're not familiar with the strums please check out my blog and search for free lesson on the mute strum. I also teach this along with many more strums and techniques in my foundation guitar course Real Guitar Awesomeness.
In this workout I'm just using my fingers for this guitar strum. You can do the same guitar strum pattern with a pick in your right-hand if you prefer. Just grasp the pick between your thumb and first finger and mute with the other three fingers in your palm. If you're playing an acoustic steel string guitar and are aiming for pop/rock styles of music this would be the way to practice it. If you're planning on learning Spanish guitar or other Latin styles of guitar playing you'll definitely want to use your fingers for strumming. This technique is a must for learning the rumba flamenco strum.
