Regions Bank has been fined $7.5 million dollars for illegally charging customers for overdraft protection.

The bank, which is one of the biggest in Chattanooga, has already refunded $49 million dollars in fees to customers.

Officials say the fine could have been much higher if the bank hadn’t self-reported the violation.
