STORYLINE:
Protesters continued to clash with police in Athens' Syntagma Square near parliament late on Wednesday after lawmakers passed a controversial austerity bill.
The sound of stun grenades and teargas shells could be heard into the night, and protesters heckled police who stood guard on and around the square.
A small group of die-hard trouble makers continued attacking riot police till late in the evening.
Up to 30 hooded youth were throwing stones and anything else at hand towards police.
The officers responded with charges and tear gas but refrained from clearing the square completely.
Rubbish and debris littered Athens' central Syntagma square after a second day of rioting.
The streets were littered with smashed marble and debris after the day's chaos.
Several banks and shop fronts were smashed, while a Socialist dissenter who backed the government at the last minute, Alexandros Athanassiadis, was briefly assaulted by protesters after leaving Parliament on foot.
By Wednesday night, police said 49 officers had been injured, one seriously when he was hit in the face by a chunk of marble.
Forty-three protesters were detained, with 17 of them arrested.
Emergency services said they had treated 99 protesters and passers-by for injuries.
Dozens of injured were treated at a first-aid centre set up inside the square's metro station.
Most were treated for breathing problems, contusions and broken bones, volunteers at the first aid centre said, appealing for medical supplies.
More protests could undermine the government's ability to implement the harsh austerity measures, which tax even the lowest-paid Greeks and raise prices during a recession.
The passage of the bill was a decisive step for the country to get the next batch of bailout loans from international creditors and was met with a huge sigh of relief in markets and by Greece's partners in the eurozone.
