In this session, Graham discusses the use of metaphor and symbol in stories. Ways of opening up meanings and helping students to analyse - and use - figurative language in their own writing will be explored using a range of texts aimed at stages 7-9.
Q&A with Graham Elsdon:
Could you suggest a concrete way to have the literature and language teachers work together for figurative language?
The key to this is good medium and short term planning. In an ideal world, the literature teachers would use reading texts to exemplify and discuss uses of figurative language and this could be picked up in language lessons where students could practise using metaphor etc. in their own stories. That of course relies on good communication and timings between teachers, so I would start by making sure your curriculum/lesson timings support that model first.
Should we break down and 'translate" poems for young pupils? At least they can enjoy the meter and flow of language?
I definitely would break down, read, explain, story-tell poems to young students. I always think that if students don’t understand texts on a basic level first, then the other deeper analysis is never going to work. There are lots of ways you can help them. Teacher talk is one way, but you could explore storylines/feelings through drama too - it’s always good to get students to feel they have ownership of the texts.
