As 9.4 million Chinese students sat for the grueling Gaokao exam, we took a look at the merits and drawbacks of the long-standing institution. For many Chinese students, it's a make-or-break opportunity that could shape the rest of their lives. Should additional factors determine a student's success, or is such a system only fair with such a large pool of students? What can we expect from upcoming reforms? And why are fewer students sitting the exam today than a decade ago? Join us for a discussion of the Gaokao with Professor Teng Jimeng from the American Studies Center at Beijing Foreign Studies University; in Chicago, Dali Yang, professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago; and in Tokyo, William Saito, special advisor to the Japanese cabinet and founder of Intecur, an international technology consulting firm.
