Nyepi is a traditional Balinese "Day of Silence" celebrated on the island of Bali in Indonesia. It is a Hindu observance that takes place annually on the day before the Hindu new year and is a day of self-reflection, meditation, and introspection. On Nyepi, the island is completely shut down, with no work, travel, or entertainment allowed. Streets are empty, lights are turned off, and even the airport shuts down for 24 hours. The goal of Nyepi is to encourage Balinese Hindus to reflect on their past actions and to purify their bodies and minds in preparation for the new year.
