Rapallo is a spectacular costal town in the region of Liguria, in northwest Italy. It is situated on the Mediterranean Sea, in the Bay of Tigullio between Portofino and Chiavari, and a short distance from the Cinque Terre. It has about 30,000 people who get to call this home.
The historical center of the town is host to pedestrian cobbled streets, called “caruggi” which cross the town center. Beautifully painted buildings are everywhere, some have stunning frescos. Every day of the year, fresh local produce, meats and cheeses are available in the farmers’ piazza. The moderate climate allows for an abundance of delicious food waiting for you.
You will find delicious specialty stores everywhere you look, featuring Ligurian olive oil, the finest wine, meats and cheeses.
The Porta delle Saline is the only remaining gate of the five from the ancient walls that were built to protect the city, and separate the historic center from the seaside promenade.
Rapallo has a wide variety of fantastic restaurants. Each with their own delicious house specialties, and serving local fresh ingredients. You’ll never be at a loss for finding a place to share special moments with friends.
The valley of Fontanabuona is a short distance from Rapallo where local slate is mined. The slate has a wide variety of uses. Many pieces are carved by hand and displayed throughout Rapallo and other local villages.
The symbol of Rapallo is without a doubt is the Castello sul Mare (Castle on the Sea). It was erected in 1549 after the town had been plundered by a Turkish pirate named Dragut. The small castle helped to defend Rapallo against future pirate attacks. Today it is used for special events and exhibitions.
The city of Rapallo was the host to two famous treaties signed after World War I. The first one was in 1920 between Italy and the Kingdom of the Serbs, Coats & Slovenia which reshaped the boarders between them. The second was in 1922 between German and Russian Foreign Ministers, ratifying the surrender of all territorial & financial claims after World War I, and it normalized the diplomatic relationship between the two governments.
According to legend, Rapallo’s history goes back to the times of Hannibal, the great enemy of Rome. A Medieval bridge is named after him. It is believed that he crossed this bridge during the second Punic War.
Rapallo is a peaceful place. Testimony of that is a beautiful church built in the 7th century. The Basilica dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio and the campanile housing 12 bells.
Throughout the year, small music groups perform in the early 20th century band shell. The dome ceiling is painted with beautiful frescos.
It is easy to get to Rapallo from either the autostrada, train or by boat.., but after you experience the Rapallo lifestyle for yourself.., you may never want to leave.
