This adventure I hike Stevens trail in Colfax California; in the Tahoe National Forest. This trail is rated hard. An out and back trail nearly 8 miles. The trail slowly descends to the North Fork of the American River. The views are breathtaking and unique. Caution if your scared of heights. The waterfall crossing is where a lot of people turn back and for good reason; with nothing to hold onto, your right on the edge with a good enough drop to cause significant harm. There is an alternative route however I couldn't find it and AllTrails tells hikers to cross the waterfall. After the Waterfall you're next landmark is an old creepy abandoned gold mine. It's said this mine is unstable and extremely dangerous. After the mine is where you get huge chunks of trail that is right next to a "cliff". With nothing to hold onto the trail can be as little as 2 feet wide with a drop big enough to do significant harm. Most people I ran into on the trail didn't seem to mind the heights like I did. After walking a ways you'll come to where I took the Thumbnail and its gorgeous. The trail becomes much closer to the river and you get to a creek. My personal opinion is do not climb down and cross the creek; it's an awkward scramble down with lots of poison oak. I'm baffled AllTrails has you take this route as there is nothing on the other side that's special enough to cross. This area is where a bridge used to be that would connect to the other side. DO NOT attempt to cross the river; the water is dangerous! When I headed back up the creek for my return trip I came very close to majorly hurting myself. I did hurt myself while preventing a fall but better than falling onto rocks. In doing research this trail is no joke as far as danger goes; Mountain Lion attacks, people needing to be air lifted, dehydration, falls... The way back is STEEP and expected for it to take a lot longer to get back; so plan your time we'll. Download AllTrails map, bring more water than you need... I have Tmobile and had reception most of the way but I always plan on not having reception. PERSONALLY I wouldn't do this trail again just because the heights and nothing to hold onto. The views and area are very beautiful. I just have to much of a fear of falling down some of these spots. As said before most hikers on the trail didn't mind the heights and most seemed to have done the trail many times before. There is a bathroom at the trailhead. Get here early as this trail is popular!! If you have any questions about the trail leave a comment.
