Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992), one of the most important Latin American composers of the 20th century, is remembered chiefly for his compositions, arrangements, and performances within the tango style. Tango, a popular dance style that originated in the bars and brothels of Buenos Aires in the late part of the nineteenth century, developed under the influence of European, African, and Caribbean music and dance genres (Argentine milonga, Uruguayan candombe, Cuban habanera, etc.)
