This DIY wooden gift hamper crate—complete with our stylish Feast Watson wood stain—is the perfect way to personalise your next gift. This video will demonstrate how to use Feast Watson Prooftint, Feast Watson Clear Varnish and a few DIY techniques to turn an ordinary wooden crate into a distinctive and stunning piece.
Our Feast Watson Prooftint has a quick-drying formula and satin finish that still shows off the natural grain of your timber. This quality timber colour stain is suitable for all interior timber, including floors, furniture, trim, panelling, window frames, skirting boards, doors, Plywood and MDF.
The Feast Watson Clear Varnish is designed to enhance and protect the natural grain of timber, not cover it up. It is available in a gloss, satin, or matt finish. Its oil-based polyurethane formula helps protect your timber against wear, tear, and scratches while the clear finish preserves its look and feel.
Let's take a look at what we will need for the DIY project:

- A wooden crate
- Clean cloth
- Paintbrush
- Flat blade stirrer
- 120 grit sandpaper
- Safety gear (gloves & protective eyewear)
Step 1 – Sand
Start by sanding the wooden crate with 120 grit sandpaper. This will help to smooth out any rough spots or splinters on the surface. Once you're done sanding, wipe away any dust with a cloth.
Step 2 - Apply Feast Watson Prooftint
Using a paintbrush, apply Feast Watson Prooftint to the wooden crate. For best results, apply in the direction of the wood grain. Depending on the depth of colour required, wait 2-5 minutes, then wipe off any excess stain. As this is bare pine, the Feast Watson Prooftint has penetrated the timber completely, and doesn't need to be wiped down. Allow to dry for 30 minutes before applying a second coat (if required).
Step 3 - Seal with Feast Watson Clear Varnish
Wait for 30 minutes until Prooftint has dried, then you're ready to seal with Feast Watson Clear Varnish. Make sure to stir thoroughly with a flat blade stirrer both before and during application. Using a brush, apply a thin layer of Feast Watson Clear Varnish to the wooden crate. Wait 8 hours before applying your second coat of Feast Watson Clear Varnish, and don't forget to re-stir before second application.
Our project is now complete! Your wooden crate has now transformed into a beautiful unique hamper ready for any occasion.
