Process mapping and visual modeling for business analysts are among many of the critical skills that a successful business analyst must have. In today’s video, we’re talking about everything to know about process maps (or process flows). We’ll cover the benefits of a process map, planning with a process map, and how to start building process maps that alleviate some of the stressors later when building new software, for example.
So, what are process maps for BAs? A process map is a visual model that shows how a collection of activities are sequenced together to accomplish work in an organization. If you’ve not heard of process maps or flows before, you may have heard them also called workflow diagrams or swimlane diagrams. One of the great things about how process maps help BAs is that they are often intuitively understood by stakeholders. They are extremely powerful communication tools, and they allow for great feedback on the process early in the requirements process.
Process maps can also serve as a strategic technique that can help discover the true problem to be solved, before digging into details around a solution to support the business. Because of this, understanding business process mapping and how to do visual modeling are essential skills for business analysts. By the end of this video, you’ll know how to draw a process map in 7 steps and incorporate a business process flow in your next project.
