Californians could soon be able to smoke recreational marijuana legally.
The state was the first in the country to legalize medical marijuana in 1996. On Tuesday, California's secretary of state's office confirmed supporters of recreational marijuana had enough signatures to get a measure on the ballot, bringing the state one step closer to expanding legal access.
The measure would legalize use for those 21 and over and would also legalize growing and possessing small amounts of the drug within the state.
If voters approve the measure, California would join Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington in legalizing recreational marijuana.
The measure is scheduled to be on the California ballot on November 8.
