Medieval necromancy can be thought as a technology by which human beings summoned the powers of the beings which inhabited the realm above the earth and below the throne of God. These beings included righteous angels, malevolent demons and planetary or celestial intelligences responsible for the forces of nature and there was, perhaps, nor more ambitious text for their invocation than the Heptameron or the Elucidation of Necromancy attributed to Peter of Abano. This volume of medieval magic claimed to systematize all former magical practices and went on to influence everything from the Lesser Key of Solomon to the Enochian Angel sessions of Dr. John Dee.
