Gaurs are coming out in herds from forests to forage in adjacent farms in Coonoor and Kotagiri in Tamil Nadu and Kodagu in Karnataka. [ Ссылка ]
Forest contiguity with coffee estates in Kodagu gives gaurs some cover and lessens direct conflict with humans. In Nilgiris though, forest fragmentation is pushing the naturally shy gaurs to remain in close proximity with humans, resulting in conflicts.
While multiple reasons are considered for increasing conflict, experts suggest a soft approach in handling this relatively harmless species.
