In my experience most people go too heavy on most of their rowing exercises. They would actually make better progress in the long run by focusing more so on accruing large amounts of HIGH QUALITY training volume on these exercises, as opposed to continuously trying to progress the loading.
There are 2 primary reasons for this:
1. The form turn to trash very quickly on rowing movements once they get a little bit too heavy. The rep quality goes out the window along with this. You no longer get that large drawback in the elbows behind the torso in the finished position, and you stop getting that big stretch on the back muscles in the extended position. With these aspects going away the purpose of the movements is defeated.
2. The back muscles involved in these movements respond better to large training volumes (as opposed to high intensities) ANYWAY. Crank up the volume and you crank up the results.
