Not quite sure what genre your book falls into? Don’t worry. This video will help.
Sometimes, it’s easy to know what genre your book is. And it’s nice when a book is easily identifiable, if you can easily recognise it as historical fiction, crime or SFF. Do go ahead and put that into a query letter to an agent, it’s information worth having.
However, not to worry if your book doesn’t have a clear category. Whatever you do, don’t try and force it into multiple sub-genres and confuse everyone involved. You simply need to do this one thing: describe your book. Yes – it really is that simple.
It’s worth remembering that the biggest section you’ll find in any bookshop is simply ‘General Fiction’. Of course – agent and editors need to have an idea of how to market a book. But, if you have a good idea and write well, let the story talk for itself.
We hope that helped ease your genre worries. Again, you can get your hands on all the slides for our YouTube videos, here:
